Right There
By Wang Yin
My recent works still lack a consistent visual style. If they seem to have some novelty, there is a sparse sense of times, or in another word, they are short of a sense of the present time. These paintings appear to be somewhat timeworn, coarse and ruinous, but they are more than being scraped together and randomly put together. To deal with works in this way, I have my own purpose and reason. Simply speaking, what painting has appealed to me is to try to grasp the consciousness of painting that I can feel, the consciousness of painting shaped by my experience of life and understanding of painting.
In my eyes, painting can keep on moving ahead in terms of style and type. It can lose style and expression. It can exist without symbols or signs. Painting can be a free means of expression with constantly changing means of expressions, or turn into a form that is short of creativity, of poor quality and going after failure. Of course, the ultimate goal is to make painting more challenging. Actually painting should challenge fixed paradigms, defy what has invaded into people”s consciousness and become stiff and systemized, and dare the subdued character and lady-like temperament of paintings placed within exhibition halls and living rooms.
Anyone dissatisfied by the reality would try to come up with a way out. This almost simple and basic principle applies to artists too - painting, after all, is an extremely down-to-earth job.
